Guys and Dolls Music
Guys and Dolls music is a beautiful thing. It accompanies the plot in a timely and often humorous way. The first Guys and Dolls song we hear is “Fugue for Tinhorns”, a debate between three characters (Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Benny Southstreet, and Rusty Charlieare) over which horse will win a certain race. The song starts up and it’s a hilarious but realistic send-up of the way these shady guys use their “inside” information to divine the big winners. Check out the lyrics and watch/listen to “Fugue for Tinhorns” below!
There are many more great numbers in the Guys and Dolls musical, including “Follow the Fold” (Miss Brown’s appeal to the guys to quit gambling), “The Oldest Established” (Nathan’s ode to the amazing longevity of his craps game), “Adelaide’s Lament” (Nathan’s doll’s realization that her cold is a psychosomatic reaction to her sadness at his not marrying her) and “Luck, Be a Lady” (the commencement of the big game, in which the guys’ future Sunday liberties are at stake).
Guys and Dolls Broadway also features moving orchestrals, including the awesome “Runyonland”, a tribute to the writer who made the whole thing possible. There’s the wonderful “Havana”, which covers the mood of Nathan and Miss Brown’s possible trip to Cuba, plus “Crapshooters’ Ballet”, a top class piece with the orchestra outdoing themselves yet again.
